A vibe coding MVP: what belongs in the first version?

Define a vibe coding MVP with one complete task, measurable criteria and user trials. Keep the experiment focused instead of creating a large project.

A vibe coding MVP: what belongs in the first version?

A vibe coding MVP is an initial version complete enough to test a hypothesis about use. It should let someone accomplish a specific task. Adding screens is not useful if you still do not know what you want to learn.

State the hypothesis you want to test

Suppose your team receives incomplete sales requests. Your hypothesis might be that a guided form will produce a usable sheet without an additional exchange.

The first version therefore needs to collect information, display it and allow corrections. An administration area, template library or advanced customisation can wait. Their absence does not stop you answering the initial question.

Keep a complete journey

A home page and an impressive button are not enough. Users must be able to start, understand the request, obtain a result and handle a simple error. The journey also includes situations in which they cannot finish.

For example, provide a message when required information is missing and a way to return to the form. Even a limited trial benefits from clearly explaining what has been kept or lost.

Rank requests by their value to the trial

For each idea, ask three questions: is it necessary to complete the task? Is it needed to interpret the trial? What happens if it is added later?

Saving may be essential if the task spans several days. It can wait if you are testing a sheet completed in one session using fictional data. Scope depends on the scenario, rather than a universal feature list.

Prepare what to observe

Let a few people from the intended audience try the version. Give them a business task without directing every click. Record where they hesitate, their questions and the quality of the resulting output.

Do not turn these observations into general statistics. Their first purpose is to identify difficulties to correct. If several people interpret a field differently, revise its label before adding another feature.

Prepare the next decision

At the end of the trial, compare results against the initial criteria. If the sheet is still unusable, identify why: missing information, an incorrect rule or an interface problem. A colour change will not solve all three.

Then choose to continue, change the hypothesis or stop. If you continue, define the next step: a new audience, real data or a connection. Each can introduce additional requirements that deserve their own review.

Frequently asked questions

Does an MVP need to be used by customers?

Not necessarily. A first MVP can be tested internally. Its audience and conditions of use should match the hypothesis you want to examine.

How is it different from a mock-up?

A mock-up presents a proposed journey. An MVP supports a limited but sufficiently realistic use to observe whether the expected task and value are achieved.
