Vibe coding can help you explore an application based on an Excel file, but a useful conversion begins by analysing the work. A shared spreadsheet may calculate, track cases and pass information between people. These functions should not be reproduced at random.
Identify the real difficulty
Are several versions circulating by email? Are formulas overwritten? Do colleagues no longer know which row to edit? Each difficulty calls for a different response. Protecting or reorganising the workbook may sometimes be enough.
Choose a representative situation. For example, an employee adds a request and a manager changes its status. You can compare that journey in the current file and a limited prototype.
List the hidden rules
Colours may represent statuses, an empty cell may trigger an action and a hidden sheet may contain calculations. Ask the people who have used the file for years.
For each column, record its meaning, format and origin. List formulas, dropdowns and regular manual corrections. An application that reproduces only the table’s appearance may lose part of the working method.
Begin with a small fictional dataset
Prepare a few rows covering common cases: a complete request, unknown information and a closed case. Ask for an initial interface to view, add and edit those rows according to the agreed rules.
Avoid giving the generation tool the entire file immediately. A reconstructed sample lets you understand behaviour and check formats without exposing information about customers or colleagues.
Compare results row by row
If you reproduce a calculation, use the same inputs and compare outputs with the reference. Examine dates, decimal separators, empty fields and rounding.
Test exports as well. Can you recover cases in a usable table? Do identifiers remain stable? Missing data should be distinguished from zero whenever that difference matters to your work.
Prepare the team’s transition
Define which version is authoritative during the trial. If everyone keeps changing both the spreadsheet and the application without a rule, you will have two divergent sources.
Plan a way back and a method for reconciling data. Before shared use, have permissions and simultaneous changes examined. The desired improvement should be visible in the journey: less confusion, consistent entry or better visibility of cases.
Frequently asked questions
Can you automatically convert a whole workbook?
Generation can help produce a starting point, but formulas, macros, dependencies and unwritten rules must be checked. The file’s appearance cannot describe all of them.
When should you keep Excel?
When the workbook meets the need, its use remains controlled and an application would add more maintenance than value.
