Maintaining a vibe coding project means being able to find its files, understand its rules and change a version without losing the previous one. The creation conversation is not enough. Prepare a handover that somebody else can actually use.
Keep the project in an identified space
Bring together the code, useful instructions and launch information. Manage project accounts according to company practices, with appropriate continuity of access.
Ask where the currently used version is kept and how it relates to the saved files. If several folders are called “final”, the next correction will be difficult to control. Identify versions and record significant changes.
Use a usable history
Git is a version-control system that tracks changes to a project. GitHub documentation explains its role in preserving and consulting history. A competent person can help organise it without expecting you to master every command.
Connect changes to business reasons: a new rule, a defect correction or a journey improvement. Useful history explains why a decision was made and lets you compare behaviour before and after it.
Write a short handover guide
Describe the objective, users, main rules and known limits. Add the steps for running the tool, required services and how to test the main journey.
Document where access rights are managed without copying secrets into the guide. The person taking over should know whom to ask for permission and how to recognise a test environment. A small fictional example with an expected answer makes a useful checkpoint.
Run a handover exercise
Give the guide and project to a colleague or contractor. Request a small, predefined change followed by a check of the main journey. Record the information they were missing.
This exercise measures how well handover works. If you still need to intervene at every stage, improve the documentation. The objective is to reduce dependence on the prototype creator’s memory.
Scope future AI requests
Before each change, restate validated rules and what should be preserved. Request an impact review if the modification affects data or a connection. Repeat relevant checks after the correction.
Regularly review services, costs and dependencies. A maintainable project keeps an owner, a reference version and a way back to a known state when a change does not deliver the intended result.
Frequently asked questions
Should you keep every conversation?
Keep what explains useful decisions, but place final rules and the handover guide in the project. A long conversation is not sufficient takeover documentation.
How can you tell whether someone can take over?
Have another person run and modify the tool using the supplied materials. Observe obstacles and add what is missing.
